Day 6: Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

By Rick Rene of Blessed2Teach Ministries (https://blessed2teach.com)

Prayer Guide Day #6

How can I let fear rule when you have given me your peace?

John 14:27: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Father, I declare that my heart is not troubled or afraid because you give me peace. In Jesus name. Amen.

Context:

The true context of this verse on peace is around Jesus telling us that he gives us a helper, the Holy Spirit.  We will review verses 15-31 which are often summarized as “Jesus promises the Holy Spirit.”  First, Jesus tells us if we love him and obey his teachings, he will give us a helper forever!  This “Spirit of truth” will not be received by the world, but it will be within us!

Jesus does not leave us as orphans and will be with us.  He warns his disciples he will temporarily leave them, pointing to his crucifixion, but that this will actually result in him living and us living eternally.  We prove our love by obeying the teaching of Jesus, and if we love him, the Father will also love us, and Jesus will show himself to us. In fact, Jesus tells us both he and the Father will make their home with us.  The Father will send the helper, the Holy Spirit, in Jesus’s name, and the Holy Spirit will teach us “all things” and help us remember Jesus’s words. These words give us peace.

Even though Jesus was going to leave them physically, even the disciples could rejoice because Jesus was going to the Father, and his resurrection would help the disciples who love him believe.  This points to the very gospel as discussed in Romans:

Romans 10:9: …if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Jesus tells them the “ruler of the world” is coming, and although the devil “has no claim” on Jesus, Jesus will do what the Father commanded him to do. Why? That is answered in the final verse:

John 14:31: but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father.

Jesus submitted to the cross so that we can receive the helper, the Holy Spirit!

Devotional

In this teaching from Jesus, he tells us plainly what proves our love for him and how we will be rewarded:

  •  “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
  • And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,

What a promise.  If we love him, we get a helper “forever”! This is also discussed in 2 John:

2 John 1-2: …whom I love in truth, and not only I but also all who know the truth, because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever

This helper is identified, and we are told who will receive him and how he will actually dwell in us:

  • …, even the Spirit of truth
  • whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him nor knows him.
  • You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

Notice that his “Spirit of truth” is identified as a “him,” a person, and not an “it,” a power.  Yes, the Holy Spirit is a person, the third person of the Trinity, of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Jesus then comforts his disciples but also forwarns them about his temporary departure:

  • I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
  • Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me.
  • Because I live, you also will live.
  • In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

This is one of the first teachings where we learn that Jesus will be living inside of us and that our life, our eternal life, is based on the eternal life of Jesus. This also results in the love of the Father and Jesus showing himself to us:

  • Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me.
  • And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

A disciple asks him a question, which Jesus answers in detail:

  • “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us and not to the world?”
  • If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
  • Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.
  • These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you.
  • But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

So, Jesus will manifest himself to us through the Holy Spirit!  This helper will teach us all things and help us remember his teachings.

Jesus continues comforting the disciples and points to his death and resurrection:

  • Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
  • Not as the world gives do I give to you.
  • Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
  • You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’
  • If you loved me, you would have rejoiced because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.
  • And now I have told you before it takes place so that when it does take place, you may believe.

Jesus prepared his disciples for his crucifixion and resurrection which is the key to the entire gospel.  Gospel means “good news,” so if we love Jesus, he gives us peace and absolute proof that he conquered the grave and has power over death.  We can believe, have eternal life, and live this life in peace in all circumstances, as discussed in Philippians:

Philippians 4:12-13  … In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Jesus then educates us on the evil one and how the world will know Jesus loves the Father by submitting to his will despite the devil having no claim on him:

  • The ruler of this world is coming.
  • He has no claim on me
  • but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father.

Jesus did this not only because he loves the Father, but also because he loves you and wanted to give you the helper, the Holy Spirit, to live within you!

“Father, I thank you for the gospel and for giving us this helper, the Holy Spirit. I declare peace in my mind and in my life in all circumstances. I am saved and justified by the blood of Jesus and the evil one has no claim on me because Christ lives in me! In the name of Jesus. Amen.”
