Day 4: Man Shall Not Live By Bread Alone

By Rick Rene of Blessed2Teach Ministries (https://blessed2teach.com)

Prayer Guide Day #4

Bread alone will not give me health. I make wise choices in food selections and portions. When I am tempted with bad choices, I use the word of God to strengthen me.

Matthew 4:4: “‘But he answered, ‘It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”

Father, I declare that I will treat my body as a Holy Temple and will lean on your word to motivate me.  I will eat and drink a balanced diet for the glory of God! In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Context

The context of this verse about not living by bread alone is the “Temptation of Jesus” in the wilderness by the devil in the first 11 verses of Matthew 4.  This starts out with the Spirit actually leading Jesus into the wilderness specifically to be tempted, which shows us that this was a choice God made to build up Jesus and his steadfastness.  This is similar to what James teaches us:

James 1:2-3: Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

We then learn Jesus fasted 40 days and 40 nights and was hungry before the tempter arrived.  It seems the devil waits until we are in our weakest moment since Jesus was nearly at the point of death since most humans cannot survive much longer than 40 days without food.  The devil reminds Jesus that the son of man can turn stones into loaves of bread before Jesus answers him with the famous verse about not living on bread alone but by the word of God.  Jesus is actually quoting the last part of Deuteronomy 8:3

Deuteronomy 8:3: And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

So we see Jesus using scripture to avoid temptation, and we can do the same thing when it comes to bad food and drink options.  Next, we see the devil take Jesus to the top of a Temple and then use two scriptures to tempt Jesus to throw himself down so Angels will protect him.  Instead, Jesus uses scripture again, saying, “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.”  We also can make sure we don’t treat our bodies badly, expecting God to heal us later.  We know he can heal us, but let’s not put him to the test.  Since the first two temptations did not work, the devil then tempts Jesus with power, offering him “all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.”  This is when Jesus says, “Be gone, Satan” and uses scripture again, confirming that he would only serve God.  We too can resist the devil, as discussed in James 4:

James 4:7:  Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

This section ends with Angels coming to comfort Jesus.  This all preceded Jesus starting his ministry!  God will also command Angels concerning us if we love him with all our heart!  Part of loving God with all our heart is making sure we are taking care of the body he gave us.

Devotional

“The Temptation of Jesus” group of scriptures starts out with the Spirit leading Jesus, on purpose,

into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil:

  • Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness
  • to be tempted by the devil.

We are not sure if Jesus decided to fast or that there was just no food available.  But we know, after 40 days, he was very hungry, maybe even to the point of death:

  • And after fasting forty days and forty nights
  • he was hungry.

Only after Jesus was at one of his lowest points did the devil come to tempt him to do a miracle to create food, but Jesus did not take the bait:

  • And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”
  • But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Jesus gives us an example of how to fight our flesh and use scripture to fight our temptations.  If he can avoid eating food offered from the devil when starving, we certainly can use scripture to avoid unhealthy foods and drinks.

Since food was not going to motivate Jesus, Satan switches tactics to try to get Jesus to use his gifts to show off,  and uses scripture to get him to do so:

  • Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple
  • and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down
  • for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
  • And “‘On their hands, they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

Instead, Jesus used scripture once again to not yield to the temptation:

  • Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Jesus quoted again from Deuteronomy:

Deuteronomy 6:16: “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.

We can apply not putting God to the test in working to not making bad choices about our health and expecting God to heal us despite our bad choices.

After two failures, the devil decides to offer Jesus everything, and all Jesus needed to do would be to worship him:

  • Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain
  • and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
  • And he said to him, “All these I will give you,
  • if you will fall down and worship me.”

Jesus instructs us how to deal with this temptation.  He tells the devil to leave and uses scripture to affirm his commitment to the Father:

  • Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan!
  • For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”

The devil offers special powers to many people who can even have fame and even temporary health if they just worship him.

Matthew 16:26For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?

If we realize this and also commit to only serve God and God alone, we can command the devil to leave in the name of Jesus, and we will be comforted:

  • Then the devil left him,
  • and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

The evil one will tempt us in many ways, but God always provides us a way out:

1 Corinthians 10:13: No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

We can apply this to our health where if we turn to scripture and ask God for help, we can avoid temptations because he will provide a way out.  We just need to tell the evil one to depart in the name of Jesus and look for the way God has provided.

“Lord, I commit to a healthy lifestyle and although I have great power in the name of Jesus, I will not test God by treating my body in unhealthy ways.  Instead, I will tell the evil one to depart in the name of Jesus and will worship God only and, when tempted, will find the way out that God has provided.  In the name of Jesus, Amen.”
