Day 3: The Way, and the Truth, and the Life
By Rick Rene of Blessed2Teach Ministries (https://blessed2teach.com)
Prayer Guide Day #3
I believe in Jesus and that I have the Holy Spirit in me. I will use the authority he has given me to accomplish great things for his Kingdom!
John 14:12: “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.“
Father, I declare my belief in Jesus as my Lord and that you raised him from the dead. I now have the Holy Spirit in me and will use the authority you have given me in Christ. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
Context
This powerful verse about us doing greater works than Jesus is about Jesus being “The Way, The Truth, and the Life.” The context is found in John 14, verses 1 through 14.
Jesus starts by comforting his disciples by promising them a place in heaven and revealing Himself as the path to God.
- Jesus reassures the disciples not to be troubled, emphasizing belief in both God and Himself.
- He speaks of preparing a place in His Father’s house for them, promising to return to take them there.
- When Thomas expresses confusion about the way, Jesus declares Himself “the way, the truth, and the life,” which is essential for reaching the Father.
Other scriptures confirm this about Jesus. He is the way:
Hebrews 10:20: by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,
His is the truth:
John 1:17: For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
His is the life:
John 11:25: Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,
Pretty amazing that Jesus is saying that we will have the authority to do his works when he is the very way, the truth and the life!
Next, Philip asked Jesus to reveal God the Father, leading to Jesus’ clarification of His divine nature and unity with the Father.
- Philip’s Request: Philip asks Jesus to show them the Father, suggesting a desire for a direct revelation of God.
- Jesus’ Response: Jesus expresses surprise at Philip’s request, implying that knowing Him is equivalent to knowing the Father.
- Unity of Father and Son: Jesus explains the inseparable relationship between Himself and God, emphasizing that His words and deeds are from the Father.
Jesus also tells them that the very works he was doing in front of them was evidence of the this great truth. He also discussed this in John Chapter 5:
John 5:36: But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me.
Then Jesus promises that believers will perform miracles like his, and even greater ones, with the assurance that their prayers in His name will be answered to glorify God.
- Miracles by Believers: Those who believe in Jesus will do the same works as He did.
- Greater Works: They will accomplish even greater works after Jesus ascends to the Father.
- Prayers Answered: Jesus commits to answering prayers made in His name, aiming to glorify the Father through the Son.
Clearly, we have more authority than most people realize. Jesus assures us of our ability to perform miraculous deeds and promises the fulfillment of prayers made in His name to enhance God’s glory. Let’s learn how to use our authority in Christ!
John 14:1-14:

Devotional
Jesus starts with the basics of not living in fear, but with faith.
- “Let not your hearts be troubled.
- Believe in God; believe also in me.
This is the key to using our authority to live without fear as discussed in 2 Corinthians:
2 Cor 5:6-7: So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight.
Faith and belief give us hope for the future of eternal life, and Jesus talks about our heavenly home and how we can be with him and the Father:
- In my Father’s house are many rooms.
- If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
- And if I go and prepare a place for you,
- I will come again and will take you to myself
- that where I am you may be also.
So Jesus has prepared a place for us and will be with us. As he prepares his disciples for the cross, he also teaches amazing truths:
- And you know the way to where I am going.”
- Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going.
- How can we know the way?”
- Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.
Jesus clearly tells us “the way.” The way to his Father’s house is not through our works, but it is through Jesus himself, the way, the truth, and the life! Then we learn what many consider controversial; Jesus teaches he is the only way to his Father’s house:
- No one comes to the Father except through me.
- If you had known me, you would have known my Father also.
- From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
The fact that Jesus is the only way to the Father, is reiterated in the book of Acts as well:
Acts 4:12: And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Jesus wants them to understand this great truth that they have already known and seen the Father by watching Jesus. However, Philip asks for more:
- Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”
- Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip?
- Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.
- How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
- Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?
Jesus makes it very clear that they are seeing the Father through Jesus. He then emphasizes the authority given to him by his Father and is setting up that we also can operate in this authority:
- The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority,
- but the Father who dwells in me does his works.
- Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,
- or else believe on account of the works themselves.
The great works they had all witnessed testified to the fact that the Father was working through Jesus. Now Jesus makes one of the most amazing statements ever alluding to our authority:
- “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do;
Think about that… Jesus did what no other human on earth had ever done: he healed the sick where the blind would see, the dumb would speak, and the deaf would speak again. He even raised people from the dead. Jesus said, “whoever believes” in him will do these things! But he does not stop there! He continues by saying we will do even more:
- and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.
What? We will do greater works than Jesus? How is that possible? Because Jesus went to the Father and sent his Holy Spirit to us. And as the body of Christ arises, together we can do more than even Jesus did. Jesus wants us to understand our authority and the power of faith:
- Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
- If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
This is why we ask for things in Jesus name. Jesus informs us that if we are not doing his works, it is because of our little faith:
Matthew 17:20: He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
He has given us great authority, but we must understand this authority, increase our faith, and learn how to use it!
Lord, I believe in Jesus as my Lord and Savior and know that he is the way, the truth, and the life. The Holy Spirit lives in me. Therefore, I have the authority to do the works of Jesus. I claim the faith that can move mountains and will start using my Authority in Christ like never before! In the name of Jesus. Amen.
