Day 4: Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest

By Rick Rene of Blessed2Teach Ministries (https://blessed2teach.com)

Prayer Guide Day #4

I seek rest by coming to Jesus, acknowledging my burdens, and trusting in His promise of relief. I release all my worries, stress, and exhaustion into your capable hands.

Matthew 11:28-30:  Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Father, I come to you and submit everything to you. Yoke me, and my soul will rest as you guide me. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Context

These verses in Matthew 11 are packed full of wisdom that goes beyond just coming to Jesus for Rest.  The context of this teaching from Jesus starts in verse 25 and ends in verse 30.  Jesus starts by expressing gratitude to His Father and for his divine wisdom.  This wisdom he has hidden from the wise of the world.  This is explained in even more detail in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians:

1 Corinthians 1:19-20: For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

Instead, the Father has revealed his divine wisdom to the humble who have childlike faith.  Jesus explained this in the book of Matthew as well:

Matthew 21:15-16: But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, “‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise’?”

So not only will children praise the Lord, but even infants and nursing babies!  This shows that God can use anyone and does not need people who are wise by the world’s standards.  It’s the Father’s “gracious will” to reveal truth through his divine wisdom to those the world considers unwise.

Jesus then teaches us his unique relationship with the Father:

  • The Father has given Jesus “all things,” so Jesus has the ultimate authority of God
  • And only the Father truly knows the Son and only the Son truly knows the Father

Therefore, Jesus has the power to choose to reveal the Father to us.  And Jesus does just that!  All we have to do is come to him!  He extends an invitation for rest to the weary, promising gentleness and ease:

  • He calls all who are tired and burdened.
  • His yoke is described as easy and his burden as light.

Jesus uses the metaphor of a yoke, which was a wooden beam used to join two oxen together for pulling heavy loads. The metaphor implies:

  • Shared Burden: The yoke symbolizes work or burden. By inviting you to take His yoke, Jesus is offering to share life’s burdens with you. Following Him will make the burdens of life easier to bear because he will help carry them.
  • Learning and Guidance: In the same verse, Jesus says, “learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart.” His yoke involves learning from him, adopting his ways, and following his teachings. It’s about discipleship, where one learns humility and gentleness from Jesus.
  • Rest and Ease: Jesus promises, “you will find rest for your souls.” Following his way leads to spiritual peace and rest. Even though the work of following Jesus involves commitment and effort, it’s ultimately restful compared to the heavy, unguided burdens one might face without Jesus.
  • Partnership: The imagery of a yoke also implies a close partnership. Jesus is not just offering help from afar but is suggesting a closeness where he walks alongside, guiding and supporting you in everyday life.
  • Submission: Taking on a yoke means submitting to the one who places it. This is an invitation to submit to Jesus’ authority and guidance, which leads to freedom and peace because it aligns you with God’s will and purpose.

This metaphor resonated deeply with the farming society, where yokes were a common sight.Life with Jesus, while still involving work and challenges, is fundamentally different because of his companionship and teaching. What an awesome privilege it is for Jesus to reveal the father to us.  He discusses this in the Book of John as well:

John 17:26: I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

So let’s accept his invitation and come to Jesus.  If we have any fatigue and are tired or burdened, he will give us rest.  His yoke is an anointing over us where we give him control.  Then our heavy burdens are on him, while his burden is light.  There is no time to waste, we can all come to him and receive his rest!

Matthew 11:25-30:

Devotional

As we look at the context of coming to Jesus to receive his rest, we see that Jesus gives us a good example to follow.  He starts with gratitude:

  • At that time, Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
  • that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding
  • and revealed them to little children;
  • yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

Jesus is thankful that all people have the opportunity to have God’s divine wisdom and to understand that Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ.  Next, Jesus discusses the authority that the Father has given Jesus and that it is Jesus who can reveal the Father to us:

  • All things have been handed over to me by my Father,
  • and no one knows the Son except the Father,
  • and no one knows the Father except the Son
  • and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

This authority is expressed in Chapter 28 of Matthew as well
Matthew 28:18: And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Due to this authority, it is Jesus who can take your burdens and give you rest:

  • Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden,
  • and I will give you rest.

There is no reason to carry heavy burdens and be stressed.  Instead we give all this to Jesus.  This is the opposite of what the Jewish leaders were doing as Jesus discussed in Chapter 23:

Matthew 23:2-4: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat, so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.

So we are to give our fatigue and our burdens to Jesus and let him yoke you, so that he can love you and give you rest:

  • Take my yoke upon you,
  • and learn from me,
  • for I am gentle and lowly in heart,
  • and you will find rest for your souls.

So one solution to us being weary and burdened is to give it all to Jesus.  And even though we are submitting to his authority, his yoke and burden is easy and light compared to our yoke:

  • For my yoke is easy,
  • and my burden is light.”

John discusses this in one John:

1 John 5:3: For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

So there is nothing to lose.  His yoke is easy, his burden is light and you no longer have to be weary or try to do everything on our own.  Instead, we can find rest in Jesus by coming to him and allowing him to yoke us and guide us.  This is where we can find rests for our souls!

Lord, I will come to Jesus and I know I will find rest.  I will allow him to yoke me, guide me, and make my paths straight as he reveals the Father to me and gives me divine wisdom. Even when I am weary, I will give him all my burdens and rest my soul in his love.   In the name of Jesus. Amen.
