Day 7

By Rick Rene of Blessed2Teach Ministries

Prayer Guide Day #7:

Father, Thank you for hearing and delivering me when I cry for help.

Psalm 34:17-18 “When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit
”

The Lord is near me and uplifts my spirit continually! In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Context of Psalm 34:17-18

Psalm 34 is often titled “Taste and See That the Lord Is Good” based on the first part of the popular verse of 8:

Psalm 34:8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

Another popular verse in this Psalm is verse 4:

Psalm 34:4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.

The actual Psalm was written after David pretended to be crazy in front of a King Amalec that likely saved his life as described in 1 Samuel.

1 Samuel 21:10-15  And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to Achish the king of Gath. And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing to one another of him in dances,

‘Saul has struck down his thousands,
and David his ten thousands’?”

When David realized that he had been recognized, he panicked, fearing the worst from Achish, king of Gath. So right there, while they were looking at him, he pretended to go crazy, pounding his head on the city gate and foaming at the mouth, spit dripping from his beard. Achish took one look at him and said to his servants, “Can’t you see he’s crazy? Why did you let him in here? Don’t you think I have enough crazy people to put up with as it is without adding another? Get him out of here!”

David was so grateful that the Lord gave him the idea that delivered him out of the enemy’s hands, he wrote this psalm. It’s quite astounding to think a Philistine King would let David go when David was famous for striking down many Philistines. This Psalm gives us a wonderful example of how to praise the Lord for who he is, confirms that he will deliver us, instructs us on how to properly fear the Lord, and demonstrates how he cares for those who follow him.

Review the context here:

Psalm 34

Devotional

David wrote this song celebrating his deliverance from the Philistine King.  The Pslam starts with pure praise:

Psalm 34:1 I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

The praise continues with statements like:

  • magnify the Lord with me
  • let us exalt his name together!
  • Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!

The psalm then transitions to God’s promises for those who fear him and look to him.  The Lord:

  • “answered me and delivered me from all my fears.”
  • promises that our “faces shall never be ashamed”
  • saved him (the poor man) out of all his troubles
  • Delivers them who fear him

We then are given instructions on what to do to receive the above and other promises:

  • Take refuge in him
  • fear the Lord
for those who fear him have no lack
  • seek the Lord and lack no good thing
  • Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit
  • Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

The next section of the psalm ensures us of how the Lord fights against our enemies

  • The face of the Lord is against those who do evil
  • Affliction will slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.

The psalm ends with what our prayer guide emphasizes; more promises from the Lord:

  • When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.
  • The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
  • Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
  • The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

So if God rescued David from a Philistine King, he can deliver us from our troubles.  And as long as we are striving for righteousness and submit to him as his servants, he will redeem us and not condemn us!  Even if we are brokenhearted and crushed in spirit, he promises to be near us and save us!

“Father, thank you for saving me and not condemning me.  I am your servant and am redeemed. I claim deliverance from all my afflictions and troubles. In the name of Jesus, Amen.”
