Day 1: By Faith

By Rick Rene of Blessed2Teach Ministries (https://blessed2teach.com)

Prayer Guide Day #1

I have complete faith in God and in the future I cannot see.

Hebrews 11:1:  Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Lord,  My hope is rooted in an unshakable faith in you and my future in the unseen heaven.  In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Context

The context of this verse about faith being assurance in what we hope for and confidence in things we cannot see is the entire chapter of Hebrews 11 often summarized as “By Faith.”  For our purposes, we will focus on 11:1-16.

The authors of Hebrews start out helping people understand faith with this popular verse in verse 1 about having faith in things we can’t see.  Paul talked about this in Romans:

Romans 8:24: For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees?

Next the authors highlight how faith in God shaped the lives of key biblical figures, demonstrating that faith is the foundation of understanding, obedience, and hope. It shows that trusting God, even when outcomes are unseen, leads to righteousness and divine reward.

  • Creation and Abel’s Sacrifice: Faith reveals that God created the universe from nothing visible, affirming His power. Abel’s faith led him to offer a better sacrifice than Cain, earning God’s approval and a lasting legacy of righteousness, even after death.

The Hebrew authors discuss this in Chapter 12 where Able’s blood is in great company!

Hebrews 12:22-24: But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

  • Enoch’s Ascension and Pleasing God: Enoch’s faith pleased God so much that he was taken to heaven without dying. This underscores that faith—believing in God’s existence and His rewards—is essential to a relationship with Him.
  • Noah’s Ark and Righteousness: Noah’s faith prompted him to build the ark despite no visible signs of the flood, saving his family and condemning the unbelieving world. His trust in God’s warning made him an heir of righteousness.
  • Abraham’s Journey and Promise: Abraham’s faith drove him to obey God’s call to an unknown land, living as a foreigner while awaiting God’s promise. He looked beyond the temporary to a divine city, trusting God’s design.

Revelation 21:2: And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

  • Sarah’s Miracle and Legacy: Sarah’s faith in God’s faithfulness enabled her to conceive in old age, leading to countless descendants. This shows faith can overcome human limitations when rooted in God’s promises.
  • A Heavenly Hope: These figures died without fully receiving the promises but saw them from afar, embracing their identity as exiles seeking a heavenly homeland. Their faith showed a longing for God’s eternal city.

Jesus discusses the ultimate place he has prepared for us in the book of John:

John 14:2-3: In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

In summary, these scriptures illustrate that faith is active trust in God’s word and promises, shaping lives like Abel’s, Enoch’s, Noah’s, Abraham’s, and Sarah’s. Their stories inspire believers to pursue a deeper faith, looking to an eternal reward prepared by God.

Devotional

The authors of Hebrew give us an amazing description of what faith is:

  • Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for,
  • the conviction of things not seen.
  • For by it, the people of old received their commendation.
  • By faith, we understand that the universe was created by the word of God,
  • so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

Paul also discusses how God created things in Romans:

Romans 4:17: as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.

Calling “into existence the things that do not exist!”  This is the God in whom we can trust!
The authors now give us examples of biblical figures who demonstrated this faith:

  • By faith, Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain,
  • through which he was commended as righteous,
  • God commending him by accepting his gifts.
  • And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.

And this fascinating story about Enoch is used:

  • By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death,
  • and he was not found because God had taken him.
  • Now, before he was taken ,he was commended as having pleased God.
  • And without faith, it is impossible to please him,
  • for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists
  • and that he rewards those who seek him.

A key verse teaches us we cannot please God without faith and we do need to believe he exists and will reward our faith if we earnestly seek him.

  • By faith, Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen,
  • in reverent fear, constructed an ark for the saving of his household.
  • By this, he condemned the world
  • and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

This concept is also iterated by Paul in Romans:

Romans 4:13: For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.

We can only become righteous by having faith in Jesus Christ our Lord.  Old testament figures looked forward to the coming Messiah.

  • By faith, Abraham obeyed
  • when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance.
  • And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
  • By faith, he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land,
  • living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise.
  • For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations,
  • whose designer and builder is God.

Looking forward to the New Jerusalem and our eventual home in Heaven.

  • By faith, Sarah herself received power to conceive,
  • even when she was past the age,
  • since she considered him faithful who had promised.
  • Therefore, from one man, and him as good as dead,
  • were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.

This is detailed in Genesis chapter 22:

Genesis 22:17: I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies,

This promise was fulfilled but not until after Abraham and Sarah had died.

  • These all died in faith,
  • not having received the things promised,
  • but having seen them and greeted them from afar,
  • and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.

In the New Testament, this is no longer the case:

Ephesians 2:19: So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,

  • For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.
  • If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out,
  • they would have had opportunity to return.
  • But as it is, they desire a better country,
  • that is, a heavenly one.
  • Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God,
  • for he has prepared for them a city.

Yes, because of their faith and our faith in Jesus, God is preparing a future for us with a new Heaven and new Earth, both in the thousand years of Christ and in eternity in Heaven.

Lord, I have complete faith in you even though I cannot see you.  I have assurance in my hope of my heavenly home and I plan to demonstrate the faith of the biblical figures you discuss in Hebrews Chapter 11.  I am a member of the household of God and will serve you all the days of my life. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
