Day 4: In Awe of God’s Word

As I search your word for the answers and direction for my life, I feel your settling presence and reassurance bring me a calming peace.
Psalm 119:165: Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.
Father, I am in awe of and love your word. I search it so I will not stumble, and through your word, I have great peace. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
Context
For the full context of verse 165, we need to review the seven verses from 161-168, which is sometimes summarized as being in “Awe of God’s Word.” Most of this psalm is based on prayers, but this section of scripture directs our focus on his word, and the first verse emphasizes this:
Psalm 119:161 Princes persecute me without cause, but my heart stands in awe of your words.
We can infer that in order to have “great peace” and not stumble, as promised in vs. 165, we need to be in awe, rejoice, and love his word, laws, and rules. We also should praise him for giving us his word. This type of reverence and gratefulness allows us the benefits of never stumbling and having great peace. The last few verses end with hope and some declarations; hope in the Lord’s salvation and commitment to do his commandments, love for his testimonies and promise to keep his precepts. The key to this is to revere God’s word and obey them. Paul discusses this in Colossians:
Colossians 3:16: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
We should let his words dwell in us, we should teach his words, sing about his words, all with a thankfulness in our hearts to God. Join us where we do this four days a week on Rumble on the Blessed2Teach Show:

Bible Gateway passage: Psalm 119:161-168 - English Standard Version
Sin and Shin Princes persecute me without cause, but my heart stands in awe of your words. I rejoice at your word like one who finds great spoil. I hate and abhor falsehood, but I love your law. Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous rules. Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.
Devotional
Many of us feel persecuted “without cause,” and some of this may even come from government institutions, but this psalm encourages us to change our mindset and declare:
- My heart stands in awe of your words
- I rejoice at your word like one who finds great spoil
And although we “hate and abhor falsehood” we can still say:
- I love your law (the word of God)
- I praise you for your righteous rules (guidance)
If we do this, then we reap rewards:
- Great peace have those who love your law (your words)
- Nothing can make them stumble
This promise is iterated in Proverbs 3 here:
Proverbs 3:1-2: My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.
Proverbs 3:23: Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble.
So we see that the Word of God will give us peace, add years to our lives, and keep us from stumbling! Another promise in his word is inheriting eternal salvation:
- I hope for your salvation, O Lord
Which motivates us to serve and obey him with our entire soul:
- I do your commandments
- My soul keeps your testimonies; I love them exceedingly
- I keep your precepts and testimonies, for all my ways are before you.
We cannot hide anything from the Lord since he sees all our ways, as emphasized here:
Psalm 139:3: You search out my path, and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.
Therefore, even if we are being persecuted, God is very aware of this, and we do not need to lose hope, but just focus on being in awe of his word.
“Father, my heart rejoices and is in awe of your word. I have great peace and will not stumble as I focus on praising you, loving you, and obeying your word. In the name of Jesus. Amen.”
