Day 1: A Peace that Surpasses All Understanding

By Rick Rene of Blessed2Teach Ministries (https://blessed2teach.com)

Prayer Guide Day #1

I am sustained in every circumstance by the power of the Holy Spirit. Philippians 4:6-7: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Father, I receive a peace that transcends all understanding! I will not be anxious; instead, I will lift my requests to you with thanksgiving.  In the name of Jesus. Amen

Context of Philippians 4:6-7

These verses are part of the Primary Exodus Reading Plan as well. Therefore, in this Reading Plan, we will expand the context to verses 4-13, where we start with always rejoicing, move to not being anxious, and end with the understanding that we can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us.

Despite all the trouble we have in this world, we can always rejoice knowing that the Lord is near.  In fact, we can experience a peace that surpasses all understanding if we give our problems to the Lord instead of letting our thoughts, outside events, or even evil spirits try to make us anxious.  Instead, we can just present our requests to God with thanksgiving. We are told to think and meditate about pure, loving, commendable, praiseworthy, and excellent things.  As we control our minds by focusing on these things and trusting in the Lord, God’s peace will be with us. Just as Paul prays for us in Romans:

Romans 15:33: May the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

With the God of peace with us, we can rejoice and learn to be content.  Paul gives examples of how he learned the secret of being content despite the highs and lows of life. Contentment is the proper context for this verse:

Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Yes, we can do all things, including simultaneously being content and rejoicing in peace, even during hard times!

Philippians 4:4-13:

Devotional

Understanding the full context of key verses often allows you to understand God’s wisdom at a whole new level.  This is the case with understanding verses before and after the verses telling us, “do not be anxious about anything.”

Verse 4 tells us what we should always be doing:

  • Rejoice in the Lord always;
  • again, I will say, rejoice.

This is not natural for humans, so how can we do this when even Jesus tells us that in this life, we will have trouble in this world?

John 16:33: “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

We can have this peace that surpasses all understanding by understanding that Jesus overcame the world. Verse 5 tells us to understand that the “Lord is at Hand” and to show others our reasonableness, translated in other versions as gentleness, patience, softness, modesty, etc.  If we are always rejoicing and being gentle before others, we can also do what our key verses tell us:

  • Be anxious about nothing in all situations
  • By prayer and petition, with thanksgiving
  • present our requests to God

Then a supernatural event occurs where we don’t just get peace, but a peace that surpasses all understanding!  What a promise!!

Verses 8-9 focus on what we can practice to mature in the ability to be in this state more consistently, and it’s all about our mind telling us to think about or meditate on things that are:

  • pure
  • lovely
  • commendable
  • excellence
  • worthy of praise

Paul tells us to practice these things.  How do we do that? Well, he expands on that in another letter to the Corinthians Church:

2 Corinthians 10:5b (NKJV)  bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ

So, by capturing all our thoughts and making them obedient to Christ, we can think about pure and lovely thoughts versus thoughts of worry and fear.  If we do all this, verse 9 ends with the words, “The God of peace will be with you.”

Verses 9-10 show how Paul was both rejoicing and content despite his circumstances:

  • I rejoiced in the Lord greatly
  • I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content

He then gives us examples of how he learned to be content based on different extremes:

  • I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound.
  • I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger,
  • abundance and need.

So, being content in all circumstances is the context of the popular verse 13; “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” This means this is less about being a superhero and more about rejoicing, not being anxious, and being content wherever God has us.  Yes, we can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us to be content and not be anxious in all circumstances and to always be rejoicing!

“Lord, Thank you for strengthening me to be the person of God you designed me to be. I declare good health to my body, mind, and soul. I will not be anxious about anything, will be content with my circumstances, and will always rejoice in you! In the name of Jesus, Amen.”
