Introduction

In Esther 3, King Ahasuerus promotes Haman the Agagite to the highest position in the empire and commands everyone to bow to him. Mordecai refuses, sparking Haman’s rage, which leads him to plot the total destruction of all Jews. The chapter’s details—the king’s promotion of officials, the use of lots (pur) to choose a date for genocide, the casting of lots in the first month for the twelfth month, and the issuance of irrevocable decrees in multiple languages—align with known Persian administrative practices. Ancient records from Herodotus and Persian inscriptions describe kings elevating favorites to supreme authority, using divination methods like lots for decisions, and sending multilingual edicts across the vast empire via royal couriers. Haman’s title as “the Agagite” connects him to Agag, king of the Amalekites (1 Samuel 15), Israel’s ancient enemy whom God commanded to be utterly destroyed. This historical tie underscores the ongoing spiritual conflict between God’s people and the spirit of Amalek, showing how ancient hatreds persist. These authentic elements root the story firmly in 5th-century BC Persian history, proving God’s Word accurately records real events while revealing His ongoing battle against antisemitism.

Why this matters today

The spirit of Haman—ancient Amalekite hatred reborn—appears today in voices that call for Israel’s destruction, spread lies through media, or push isolationism and hostility toward the Jews. Deep-state corruption in nations (including elite influences within Israel) can enable such evil, but God’s covenant with Israel stands unbreakable. Esther 3 warns us to recognize and oppose this rising hatred while trusting God’s providence to turn plots against His people.

Section 1 – Scripture Reading & Analysis

Esther 3:1-6: After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him and set his seat above all the princes who were with him. And all the king’s servants who were at the king’s gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman, for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage. Then the king’s servants who were at the king’s gate said to Mordecai, “Why do you transgress the king’s command?” And when they spoke to him day after day, and he would not listen to them, they told Haman, in order to see whether Mordecai’s words would stand, for he had told them that he was a Jew. And when Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow down or pay him homage, Haman was filled with fury. But he disdained to lay hands on Mordecai alone. So, as they had made known to him, the people of Mordecai, Haman sought to destroy all the Jews, the people of Mordecai, throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus.

Analysis: Haman rises to unmatched power, but Mordecai refuses to bow because of his Jewish faith and the ancient enmity with Amalek. This enrages Haman, who escalates from personal revenge to planning genocide against all Jews. The promotion and command to bow fit Persian court customs, where loyalty to the king’s favorites was enforced.

Summary: Haman the Agagite is exalted to the highest position in the empire, and everyone is commanded to bow before him—yet Mordecai, a faithful Jew, refuses, rooted in his loyalty to God and the deep historical enmity with Amalek. This simple act of courage ignites Haman’s furious pride, turning personal offense into a chilling plan to destroy not just Mordecai, but every Jew in the kingdom. Mordecai’s unwavering stand shows us that standing firm for truth, even when it costs us favor or safety, exposes evil and invites God’s greater purpose. What begins as one person’s quiet refusal can spark divine deliverance, reminding us today that faithfulness in the face of rising hatred is never in vain—God sees, He remembers, and He will turn the tide for His people.

Section 2 – Continued Scripture & Application to Current Times

Esther 3:7-15: In the first month, which is the month of Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, they cast Pur—that is, they cast lots—before Haman day after day; and they cast it month after month till the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar. Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, “There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom. Their laws are different from those of every other people, and they do not keep the king’s laws, so that it is not to the king’s profit to tolerate them. If it please the king, let it be decreed that they be destroyed, and I will pay 10,000 talents of silver into the hands of those who have charge of the king’s business, that they may put it into the king’s treasuries.” And the king took his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews. And the king said to Haman, “The money is given to you, the people also, to do with them as it seems good to you.” Then the king’s scribes were summoned on the thirteenth day of the first month, and an edict, according to all that Haman commanded, was written to the king’s satraps and to the governors over all the provinces and to the officials of all the peoples, to every province in its own script and every people in its own language. It was written in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with the king’s signet ring. Letters were sent by couriers to all the king’s provinces with instruction to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate all Jews, young and old, women and children, in one day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar, and to plunder their goods. A copy of the document was to be issued as a decree in every province by proclamation to all the peoples to be ready for that day. The couriers went out hurriedly by order of the king, and the decree was issued in Susa, the citadel. And the king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Susa was thrown into confusion.

Analysis: Haman uses lots (pur) to pick the date for slaughter, accuses the Jews of disloyalty, and offers money for their destruction. The king agrees without investigation, issues an irrevocable decree in every language, and the city is perplexed. Persian customs of lots, signet rings for authority, multilingual edicts, and swift couriers match historical records.

Relation to Israel Casting Lots vs. the Pagans

Casting lots was not unique to pagans—it appears throughout the Bible in both Israelite and non-Israelite contexts—but the purpose, context, and interpretation differ sharply:

• Pagan use (as with Haman):
  • Often superstitious or divinatory: Seeking “lucky/unlucky” days from fate, astral influences, or pagan gods (e.g., consulting oracles or determining auspicious timing for actions like war or plots).
  • Relied on chance as an independent force or as a way to query impersonal/divine will without direct revelation.
  • In Esther, Haman casts it “before Haman” (Esther 3:7)—emphasizing it as a human/pagan ritual for his evil scheme, trusting random chance to seal Israel’s doom.
• Israelite use (biblical examples):
  • Treated as a way to discern God’s direct will when no clear prophecy or guidance existed. It was done prayerfully, often “before the Lord” or in His presence, acknowledging that God sovereignly controls the outcome.
  • Key verses: 

Proverbs 16:33 — “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.”

• Examples:
  • Dividing the Promised Land among tribes (Joshua 18–19).
  • Choosing the scapegoat vs. sacrifice goat on Yom Kippur (Leviticus 16:8–10).
  • Selecting Saul as king (1 Samuel 10:20–21).
  • Assigning priestly duties (1 Chronicles 24–26).
  • Even in the New Testament, the apostles cast lots to choose Matthias as Judas’s replacement (Acts 1:26)—before the Holy Spirit’s full indwelling at Pentecost.
• The emphasis is on submission to God’s providence, not superstition or magic. The lot removes human bias and lets God decide.

The Key Contrast of “Pur” (Lots) and Irony in Esther

• Haman (a pagan/Agagite descendant) casts lots, trusting in chance/fate/pagan forces to destroy God’s people.
• Yet God overrules it entirely: The “random” date gives time for deliverance, the plot backfires, and Haman’s own instrument (pur/lots) names the holiday celebrating Jewish victory and God’s hidden providence.
• The Book of Esther famously never mentions God’s name explicitly, but His sovereignty shines through—He turns pagan superstition into proof that nothing thwarts His plan for Israel.

In short, “Pur—that is, they cast lots” captures the pagan method Haman used against the Jews, but God sovereignly flips it into salvation—making Purim a reminder that the God of Israel reigns over every “chance” event.

Application to Current Times:

Today’s anti-Israel voices in media, politics, and global forums echo Haman’s lies—portraying Jews as disloyal or a threat. Deep-state elements can enable such agendas, but we reject this hatred, oppose corruption everywhere, and stand with Israel as God’s covenant people whose promises will triumph over any modern “Haman.”

Father, thank you for exposing the spirit of Haman and Amelek in every age. Help us discern hatred disguised as policy or opinion, and give us courage like Mordecai to stand firm.
