Day 3: Manifestation Gifts
By Rick Rene of Blessed2Teach Ministries (https://blessed2teach.com)
Prayer Guide Day #3
I will work for the common good of my brothers and sisters in Christ by using the manifestation gifts God has given me.
1 Cor 12:7: To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
Father, I will use the manifestation spiritual gifts you have given me to help build up the church and honor you. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
Context
The context of this verse about the manifestation of the spirit for the common good encompasses 1 Cor 12:1-11 which is often titled Manifestation Spiritual Gifts. Paul starts out by telling us he does not want us to be uninformed about Spiritual Gifts. And now that we are no longer “lead astray”, we need to understand when we speak in the Spirit of God:
- No one can say “Jesus is accursed!” and
- No one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit
As an apologist, I often teach that when people speak of Jesus, they need to be speaking of the right Jesus, the second person of the trinity who was God in flesh, Immanuel. John also teaches this in 1 John after telling us to test the spirits:
1 John 4:2-3: By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.
Therefore, we can combine saying, “Jesus is Lord” and believing he came in the flesh are keys to testing the spirits.
Then Paul teaches that there are varieties of:
- Gifts: Abilities given by the Spirit,
- Service: Functions or roles people take on to serve others, and
- Activities: Results or outcomes that God produces through the use of gifts and service
Together, these three show a progression: God gives the gift, which a person uses in service, resulting in activities that reflect God’s power.
Despite all these varieties, they are all empowered by the same Spirit and Lord.
Then Paul uses the key word “manifestation” when he tells us that each of us (all of us who are in Christ) are given “is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” as he lists all nine manifestation gifts:
- Utterance of wisdom
- Utterance of knowledge
- Faith
- Gifts of healing
- The working of miracles
- Prophecy
- The ability to distinguish between spirits
- Various kinds of tongues
- The interpretation of tounges
Paul emphasizes many times that this is all according to and empowered by the same spirit that is only one. These gifts are given by God to each of us as he wills.
Hebrews 2:4: while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
So let us understand which gifts he has bestowed on each of us. One way is to sign-up for the Impactor for Truth self-paced online class where module 3 has several spiritual gift assessments, where the second one compares all spiritual gifts (motivational, manfestation and ministry):
What a huge privilege that we are given spiritual gifts once we accept Christ as our Lord and savior. These are likely part of our calling and path, so let’s learn how to use them as part of the Body of Christ!
1 Cor 12:1-11:

Devotional
Paul wants us to be informed about spiritual gifts once we move from death to life and have the Holy Spirit residing in us:
- Now, concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
- You know that when you were pagans, you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led.
Now that you are led by the Holy Spirit you can help discern spirits by what people say about Jesus:
- Therefore, I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says, “Jesus is accursed!”
- and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
Paul then moves on to teach us how the unity of the one spirit empowers a variety of gifts, services and activities.
- Now, there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
- and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;
- and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
- To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
We can see that Paul is focusing on manifestation gifts of the spirit, not a comprehensive list of all spiritual gifts. He lists 9 manifestation gifts:
- For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom,
The wisdom of the spirit is expanded back in Chapter 1:
1 Corinthians 2:6-7: Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.
- and to another, the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,
God’s wisdom and knowledge are discussed in the book of Daniel:
Daniel 2:21b-22a: …he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; he reveals deep and hidden things…
- to another, faith by the same Spirit,
- to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
- to another, the working of miracles,
- to another prophecy,
- to another, the ability to distinguish between spirits,
- to another, various kinds of tongues,
- to another, the interpretation of tongues.
There are three primary types of tongues which include:
- Tongues for Evangelism/Proclamation: Where Galatians spoke in different languages that others could understand as a sign of the spirit;
Acts 2:7-11: And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?… we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”
- Tongues Needing Interpretation for Edification: Mysterious tongues in unknown languages speaking to God where interpreters are needed,
1 Corinthians 14:5: Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues unless someone interprets so that the church may be built up.
- Personal Prayer Language for Private Edification and Worship: Unknown languages spoken to God, but in private.
1 Corinthians 14:4: The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.
There is no indication that any of these gifts will cease, as taught in many churches today. Also, it is clear that not everyone will manifest any certain gift.
1 Corinthians 12:29-30: Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
Paul then comes back to reemphasize several points:
- All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit,
- who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
Wow! God gives us supernatural gifts that will manifest in the natural. Each gift is likely a big part of our calling and the path he has for us, so let’s use these gifts to build up the Body of Christ.
Father, You have informed me about various gifts you have given me, and my gifts differ from others, but they all come from the same spirit and the same God. I will learn about them and use them for your glory to build up others in love. In Jesus name, Amen.
