Lord, Your word guides me and transforms me to be set apart and be used as a holy vessel for Your Kingdom. Sanctify me in the truth of Your word. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
Context
The context of this familiar verse about God’s word being truth is often referred to as “The High Priestly Prayer” or “Jesus’ Great Prayer.” We will cover verses 6-17, which can be summarized into 3 sections:
Jesus Affirms the Disciples’ Faith in God’s Word
Jesus Prays for His Disciples’ Protection and Unity
Jesus Asks for Sanctification Through Truth (which is the Word of God!)
Jesus starts out with a focus on his disciples:
Jesus Affirms the Disciples’ Faith in God’s Word: In His prayer to the Father, Jesus acknowledges the disciples’ acceptance of God’s truth.
Jesus states He has made God’s name known to those God gave Him from the world. One example is in John 8:
John 8:26:“I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.”

These disciples belonged to God, were given to Jesus, and have obeyed God’s word.
They now recognize that everything Jesus has comes from the Father.
Jesus explained this in Chapter 8 to the religious leaders of that day who had rejected Him:
John 8:42: Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me.
The disciples have received Jesus’ teachings and believe He was sent by God. This part of the prayer highlights the disciples’ trust in the truth of God’s word, as delivered through Jesus. We can anchor our efforts in God’s Word, as the disciples did, using its truth to guide our actions and transform us into who God designed us to be.
Jesus Prays for His Disciples’ Protection and Unity: He prays for the safety and unity of His disciples, recognizing the world’s hostility toward them.
Jesus prays only for those God gave Him, not the world, because they belong to God.
He asks God to keep them united, just as He and the Father are one.
While with them, Jesus protected them, losing only Judas, as Scripture foretold.

Jesus wants His disciples to have His joy, despite the world hating them for not belonging to it. This prayer emphasizes Jesus’ care for His disciples, asking for their strength and unity in a world that opposes them. We should seek unity with other believers, drawing strength from Jesus’ prayer for protection, and find joy in our shared mission, even when facing resistance from worldly systems.
Jesus Requests Sanctification Through Truth: Jesus prays that His disciples be set apart by God’s truth, which is His reliable word.
Jesus asks God to protect the disciples from evil, not to remove them from the world.
He says they don’t belong to the world, just as He doesn’t.
Jesus prays for them to be sanctified—set apart and made holy—by the truth, declaring, “Your word is truth.”
2 Samuel also records how God’s words are true:
2 Samuel 7:28: And now, O Lord God, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.

Jesus sends them into the world, as God sent Him, and dedicates Himself so they can be holy. This section ties John 17:17 to the power of God’s word as truth that transforms and guides believers, with “sanctify” meaning to purify and dedicate them for God’s purposes through His word. We can rely on God’s word as the ultimate truth and its reliable teachings to stay morally grounded and resilient as we engage with the world to uphold justice and freedom.

In this part of Jesus’s Great Prayer, Jesus focuses on the Father’s name:
“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world.
We see the Psalmist in chapter 22 discuss the importance of God’s name:

Then Jesus moves his focus to the disciples:
Yours they were, and you gave them to me,
and they have kept your word.

Belief in the word of God is critical as this belief make Jesus your advocate and we become His:
I am praying for them.
I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me,
for they are yours.
All mine are yours, and yours are mine,
and I am glorified in them.
Paul later discusses the glorification of Jesus due to our belief:
2 Thessalonians 1:10: when he comes on that day to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at among all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.

Jesus then prays for them to remain unified because he is returning to the Father:

I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

In John 14 Jesus tells us that Him going to the Father is good news:
John 14:12: “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.

Having the Holy Spirit with Jesus being in heaven with the Father should bring us joy:
and these things I speak in the world,
that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
In John 15, Jesus tells He wants our Joy to be full:
John 15:11: These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

Having joy and his truthful word will cause the world to actually hate us:
I have given them your word,
and the world has hated them because they are not of the world,
just as I am not of the world.
I do not ask that you take them out of the world,
but that you keep them from the evil one.
They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
Sanctify them in the truth;
your word is truth.
This truth saves us based on our belief in it:
2 Thessalonians 2:13: But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.

This truth allows us to live a sanctified (set apart, holy) life:
As you sent me into the world,
so I have sent them into the world.
And for their sake I consecrate myself,
that they also may be sanctified in truth.
Yes, Jesus consecrates himself to the will of the father, including his sacrificial death, so that we may be sanctified (set apart, holy) with the truth of the Word of God, which is Jesus!
Lord, What a privilege to have Jesus as our intercessor and Savior. It is only in His truth that I can be sanctified, set apart, and Holy to do great things for Him who strengthens me. Use me, Lord, for your kingdom as I stand on your word which is truth! In the name of Jesus. Amen.
