Day 3: A Holy Day and the Feast of Booths
By Rick Rene of Blessed2Teach Ministries (https://blessed2teach.com)
Prayer Guide Day #3
I will not be grieved, knowing that the joy of the Lord is my strength. I declare that fatigue has no place in me. I am energized, restored, and filled with life.
Nehemiah 8:10: Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Father, I have joy in the Lord and this joy is my strength. I will not be sorrowful, will honor you and my body as holy, and will eat healthy to give my body energy. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
Context
This beautiful verse in Nehemiah 8:10 that tells us the Lord is our strength and to not sorrow has the context of “a Holy Day and the Feast of Booths” in verses 9 through 18. Some facts about Nehemiah:
- Nehemiah was appointed as the governor of Judah under the Persian Empire.
- He was a cupbearer to King Artaxerxes I of Persia, which was a position of high trust and influence.
- He successfully led the effort to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem in 52 days, despite opposition from surrounding peoples.
After Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem’s walls, Ezra, the scribe, gathered the people in the seventh month, Tishri (maps to late Sep/early Oct in our calendar), for the Feast of Trumpets:
- First Day: On Feast of Trumpets (also called Rosh Hashanah or Jewish New Year), Ezra read from the Torah from daybreak until noon at the Water Gate. The Levites helped explain the law, revealing to the people how they had strayed, leading them to weep.
Jesus returns to Mount of Olives – 10 days later; All Israel Saved – 1,000 years of Christ
(above is another interpretation of how the Fall Feasts point to future events)
- Response: Just like a future event of Jesus returning to the mount of olives and “all Israel will be saved,” we see this first major/national revival occur in Nehemiah’s time. Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites proclaimed the day holy, urging the people not to mourn but to celebrate with feasting, drinking, and sharing with those in need. They emphasized that the joy of the Lord would be their strength. The Levites calmed the crowd, reinforcing this message and leading to celebration rather than grief.
Psalm 3:6: a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
- Second Day: The community leaders, priests, and Levites met with Ezra to delve deeper into the Law, discovering:
- As Moses instructed, the commandment to live in booths during the Feast of Booths (or Sukkot) involved gathering branches from various trees.
Leviticus 23:34: “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, On the fifteenth day of this seventh month and for seven days is the Feast of Booths to the Lord.
- They constructed these booths on rooftops, in courtyards, near the temple, and in public squares. This was the first such observance since Joshua’s time, and there was great rejoicing.
- Throughout the feast’s seven days, Ezra continued reading from the Book of the Law, culminating in a solemn assembly on the eighth day. The 8th day is known as Shemini Atzeret. It is a day of assembly (hence “Atzeret,” meaning “assembly” or “solemn gathering”) where Jews celebrate with prayers, meals, and, in some traditions, a special prayer for rain, marking the beginning of the rainy season in Israel.
The fall feasts are major holidays in Israel and are celebrated by many Christians as well. This is why, in modern-day, Israel’s enemies use these Jewish Holidays to attack Israel:
- Attack on October 7, 2023: Hamas carried out a surprise assault on Israel, combining rocket attacks with ground incursions on the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah (the 8th day of Sukkot), leading to over 1,200 deaths and numerous hostages and triggering a severe Israeli military response in Gaza.
- Yom Kippur War – October 6, 1973: 50 years earlier, Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel during the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur, leading to initial territorial gains but ultimately resulting in a ceasefire after Israeli counterattacks and significant losses on all sides.
Despite the enemy’s desire to make these Biblical feasts days of mourning, we can continue to do what Neiamiah and Ezra did and celebrate the fact that these days are holy. We do not have to be sorrowful; we can celebrate, help others in need celebrate, and know that the Lord is our Strength!

Nehemiah 8:9-18:
Devotional
Nehemiah had great success in winning the favor of the King and rebuilding the walls in Jerusalem despite resistance from Israel’s enemies. After this great victory, they dedicated themselves to the study of the Torah:
- And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra, the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people, said to all the people,
- “This day is holy to the Lord your God;
- do not mourn or weep.”
- For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law.
Repentance is something the Lord loves, but once we have a repentant heart, and come near the Lord, we can celebrate:
- Then he said to them,
- “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine
- and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready,
On days of celebration, the Lord wants everyone to celebrate, not just those with means. This is also the way Purim is celebrated based on the story of Esther:
Esther 9:22: as the days on which the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and gifts to the poor.
Note how they included “gifts to the poor.” Now our focus can move away from our sin and to our God, our savior:
- for this day is holy to our Lord.
- he will protect us:
- For he will hide me in his shelter
- And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
You can apply this strength to yourselves. “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” Despite your past sins, you can rest in him and rejoice:
- So the Levites calmed all the people, saying,
- “Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.”
- And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions
- and to make great rejoicing,
- because they had understood the words that were declared to them.
This is the key to walking closely with God; to understand God’s word and start to live for him and serve others vs. ourselves.
Philippians 2:3-4: Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others.
This is another way of emphasizing the “golden rule.”
The following day, the people get reintroduced to the Feast of Booths (Sukkot):
- On the second day, the heads of fathers’ houses of all the people, with the priests and the Levites,
- came together to Ezra, the scribe, in order to study the words of the Law.
- And they found it written in the Law that the Lord had commanded by Moses
- that the people of Israel should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month,
- and that they should proclaim it and publish it in all their towns and in Jerusalem,
The Feast of Booths (Sukkot) is considered one of the 7 major feasts and 1 of 3 pilgrimage feasts, where many Jews would and still do travel all the way to Jerusalem for this celebration. In addition, when Zacheraiah discusses the coming day of the Lord, we see that all nations will celebrate this feast:
Zechariah 14:16: Then everyone who survives of all the nations that have come against Jerusalem shall go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Booths.
“All the nations” will be celebrating this important feast. This is another reason why we teach on all 7 feasts on the B2T broadcast every year (https://blessed2teach.com).
In Neiamiah’s time, they obeyed the instructions to live in booths commemorating their ancestors who lived in the wilderness for 40 years:
- “Go out to the hills and bring branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths, as it is written.”
- So the people went out and brought them and made booths for themselves,
These temporary booths were created and place in all kinds of outdoor locations:
- each on his roof, and in their courts and in the courts of the house of God,
- and in the square at the Water Gate and in the square at the Gate of Ephraim.
- And all the assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and lived in the booths,
This was very significant because it had been 26-27 generations since they had celebrated this feast in such a committed way across the entire nation:
- for from the days of Jeshua, the son of Nun, to that day the people of Israel had not done so.
- And there was very great rejoicing.
- And day by day, from the first day to the last day,
- he read from the Book of the Law of God.
This is what the Lord wants us to do. To be in his word on a regular basis, and especially during the times of celebration:
- They kept the feast seven days,
- and on the eighth day, there was a solemn assembly according to the rule.
We too should celebrate the history of the people of Israel where Abraham’s promise that his descendants would be a blessing to all nations. Besides the Old Testament blessing of history, what applies directly to us is Abraham and David’s descendant Jesus, the Son of God, who was God in flesh and is our Savior! This blessing is why we can have even more “Confidence In And Desire For God!”
Lord, I love the history of your people that you rescued from Egypt, brought through the wilderness to the promised Land, and all the feasts you established. Thank you for blessing me and all nations by sending Jesus here to earth to be a once and for all sacrifice and die for my sins. The Lord is my strength and I will not grow weary. I will always have confidence in and desire for God! In the name of Jesus. Amen.
