WordNWorship – Your Authority in Christ

Rick then moved to WordNWorship where he taught on Jesus giving us authority over all the power of the enemy.  All his past Bible Study Guides can be found at

Exodus Study Guide:

Your Authority in Christ

The evil one wants you to think he is much stronger and more powerful than you.  He does not want you to know about the authority believers have been given over his power.  The Lord has given you authority over “all” the power of the enemy, and he wants you to use your authority in Christ constantly.

Use this Study Guide to allow God’s Word to help you become the man or woman of God that he intended you to be!  Also, leverage the Exodus Premium Supplement and Prayer Guide to give you the energy, health, and confidence to fight and win spiritual battles as you use your authority over all the power of the enemy!

Day 1: Authority Over All The Power of the Enemy

By Rick Rene of Blessed2Teach Ministries (https://blessed2teach.com)

Prayer Guide Day #1

I accept the authority Jesus gave me over all the power of the enemy and will use this authority daily in my life.

Luke 10:19:  Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.

Father, I declare that the enemy’s power is nothing compared to my authority in Christ. I take authority over the deceptive serpent spirits and the infirmities of the scorpion spirits. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Context

The context of this memorable verse about having authority over all the enemy has to do with Jesus sending out the 72 starting in verse one with the primary story ending in verse 20.  The 72 is a significant number because it is a multiplier of 12 (representative of completeness or divine government).  It’s also the number of the Elders appointed to help Moses (70 elders + Moses and Aaron = 72) in the book of Numbers:

Numbers 11:16-17: Then the Lord said to Moses, “Gather for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them, and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. And I will come down and talk with you there. And I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them, and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you may not bear it yourself alone.

Even though 72 (or 70 in some manuscripts) number may be symbolic, the most important lesson, is that this was not just the 12 disciples.  Therefore, since we have the Holy Spirit, we can definitely apply these verses to us as believers!

Jesus sent them two-by-two into every town that he was about to visit.  Jesus instructs his disciples on how to approach their mission:

  • The Urgency of the Mission: He starts by noting the plentiful harvest but the scarcity of workers, urging prayer for more laborers.
  • Preparation for Hardship: He sends them out like lambs among wolves, indicating the challenges and dangers they will face.
  • Simplicity and Focus: Jesus commands them to travel light, without money, extra clothes, or even sandals, focusing solely on their mission.
  • Peace and Hospitality: They’re to seek out peaceful homes, blessing them with peace, which will either stay or return based on the host’s reception.
  • Dependence on Others: He advises them to accept the hospitality offered, staying in one place, emphasizing the worthiness of the worker to receive sustenance.
  • Proclamation and Healing: Their task includes healing the sick and proclaiming the nearness of God’s kingdom, integrating service with evangelism.

In summary, Jesus outlines a mission characterized by urgency, simplicity, reliance on divine providence, and a message of peace and healing.

Jesus then warns about the consequences of those rejecting his message:

  • Shake off the dust from towns that reject you (Jesus tells the 72), signifying disassociation from their rejection.
  • Comparative judgment: He states that unrepentant cities like Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum will face a harsher judgment than even Sodom, Tyre, and Sidon due to the miracles witnessed.
  • Divine Authority: Rejection of the disciples is equated with rejecting Jesus and God Himself.

This passage underscores the gravity of rejecting the gospel and the accountability of those who have seen or heard the message back then and even today.  We are representatives of Jesus on earth today as the body of Christ, or amassadars of Christ as described in:

2 Corinthians 5:20:  Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

Again, we represent Christ on earth and are filled with the Holy Spirit, so we are to do the works of Jesus.

The 72 disciples return with Joy as Jesus teaches them (and us) about his authority :

  • They return jubilantly, reporting their power over demons in Jesus’ name.
  • Jesus acknowledges their victories, likening them to the fall of Satan.
  • Jesus grants them authority over all evil but advises them to rejoice in their heavenly citizenship even more.

Jesus underscores the spiritual authority given to believers while emphasizing the greater joy of salvation.  We can celebrate both our salvation and the fact that we have power over “all” the power of the enemy!

Luke 10:1-20:

Devotional

In this story, we see Jesus sending out far more than just his 12 disciples to prepare for his arrival:

  • After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two,
  • into every town and place where he himself was about to go.

Jesus teaches them about the harvest and the need for laborers:

  • And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
  • Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.

This task will not be easy as the evil one will try to stop them, but they will learn about the power of God because they will carry no provisions:

  • Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.
  • Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road.

And, of course, the Lord came through as we see later in Luke:

Luke 22:35: And he said to them, “When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.”

They were to not move around, but stay with only one host:

  • Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’
  • And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him.
  • But if not, it will return to you.
  • And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages.

They would learn to depend on God and how he is our great provider:

  • Do not go from house to house.
  • Whenever you enter a town, and they receive you, eat what is set before you.

Jesus assumed all the groups would have the power over sickness as they were serving him:

  • Heal the sick in it
  • and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’

When the 72 returned, they also learned that demons were subject to them in Jesus name!

Then Jesus moves to the difficult topic of judgment coming on those who do not accept his message:

  • But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say,
  • ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you.
  • Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’
  • I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

A shocking statement when you think about the evil of Sodom!  Jesus explains this further when we talks about unrepentant cities:

  • “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!
  • For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,
  • they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

Tyre and Sidon were judged but did not get destroyed entirely like Sodom. However, they never returned to their glory before the prophetic judgments of Ezekiel and Isaiah.  Jesus continued:

  • But it will be more bearable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.
  • And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven?
  • You shall be brought down to Hades.

Jesus’ ministry home town was purview to many miracles, but most rejected Jesus.  Jesus then teaches that this also applies to individuals:

  • The one who hears you hears me,
  • and the one who rejects you rejects me,
  • and the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

And those who rejected the disciples (or us as we speak the truth), is the same as rejecting Jesus himself!

The story then turns to the return of the 72 and their joy:

  • The seventy-two returned with joy,
  • saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!”

A clear testimony that God will work through us and if we use the name of Jesus, demons are subject to us.

  • And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

This showed that the victory of the disciples was like Satan falling from heaven!  Then Jesus teaches this incredible truth:

  • Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions,
  • and over all the power of the enemy,
  • and nothing shall hurt you.

That is the authority over “all” the power of the enemy, not some, but all.  We also can tread on serpents and scorpions. Many believe this is the authority we have over spirits that are primarily deceivers (serpents) and spirits that are primarily tormentors with infirmities (scorpions). Our training on Inner Healing and Deliverance (

) training and experience show that when Jesus heals a past wound and demons flee, healing miracles often take place, showing how these scorpion-type demons often have infirmities attached to them.  So take action and ensure you and your loved ones understand inner healing.  This is why we have a ministry dedicated to help.

When Jesus tells us, “Nothing shall hurt you,” he likely is referring to what Paul teaches in Romans:

Romans 8:28: And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Therefore, we can move forward taking authority over demons and all the power of the enemy.  This is wonderful, but Jesus ends with what we should really rejoice in:

  • Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you,
  • but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Amen! Our salvation is the most amazing miracle ever!  So let’s rejoice in our salvation, but also take advantage of our authority in Christ over all the power of the enemy.

Father, I rejoice in my salvation and will be forever grateful. I will also take authority over all the power of the enemy to advance your kingdom. All spirits/demons are subject to me in your name and I expect to see deceiving spirits and spirits with infirmities removed from me and those I pray for.  In the name of Jesus. Amen.
