Day 4: Overcoming the World by the Son of God

By Rick Rene of Blessed2Teach Ministries (https://blessed2teach.com)

Prayer Guide Day #4

I do not have to wonder if I am saved or not, because I believe in the name of the Son of God, so I know that I have eternal life.

1 John 5:13: I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.

Father, I declare my belief in the Son of God and what he did for me at Calvary. He died for me and I believe God raised him from the dead.  My belief in his name allows me to be sure of my eternal life! In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Context

This verse, where John tells us “that we may know that you have eternal life” has the context of “Overcoming the World” and doing this through the Son of God.  John starts by telling us that “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God” and this is the key to overcoming the world.  When we are “born of God,” we will love the Father and love others who love the Father. And if we believe in Jesus and love others who love God, we will also obey his commandments.  This is not talking about the man-made requirements of legalism and is more about recognizing we are “born of God” and need to live for him vs. ourselves.  And this is how we overcome the world through our faith.  John again emphasizes that only those who believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, are the ones who overcome the world.

John then emphasizes the importance of the blood of Jesus as well as the Spirit.  There is also a perpexing verse with many interpretations about Jesus coming by “water and blood” which likely was John dispelling the teachings of the Gnostics about Jesus only being a spirit.  No, he was flesh and blood and water likely representing the washing away of your sins represented by baptism.  John discussed this in the passages surrounding being born again in John Chapter 3:

John 3:5: Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

Here in 1 John, John talks not only about water and the Spirit, but also the blood, all testifying about Jesus being the Son of God. John differentiates the testimony of man from the testimony of God, which he sees as the Spirit, the water and the blood.  John also makes it clear about the importance of testimony in verse 11:

1 John 5:11: And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

Yes, our eternal life is “in his Son,” Jesus, and if you have the Son you have life, and if you do not have the Son, you do not have life.

Then John tells us why he records all these things in his writings to his audience of those who believe in the Son of God.  He wants us to “know” that we have eternal life.  No hope for, or think, but to know as a 100% fact.  We do not have to have any doubt.

Then John makes it clear that because of our faith in the Son of God, “if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.”   What an awesome God.  He not only assures us of our eternal life, but he also allows us to approach his throne with confidence:

Hebrews 4:16: Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

So, as we draw near to his throne, we not only receive mercy and grace, but we are assured as well that he hears us “in whatever we ask!”

1 John 5:1-15:

Devotional

This entire passage helps assure us of our salvation and our ability to overcome the word because of our faith, and this faith allows us to love the Father and others:

  • Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God,
  • and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.

Not only will we love other believers, we also will do our best to obey what we learn in his word:

  • By this we know that we love the children of God,
  • when we love God and obey his commandments.
  • For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments.

Again, the Bible is clear that all have sinned and no one is righteous, but that’s why we live by the righteousness of Christ and depend on the Holy Spirit to allow us to live Biblical values.  This process of living out our faith is how we overcome the world:

  • And his commandments are not burdensome.
  • For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world.

So we live our life in the flesh by faith in the Son of God as Paul describes in Galatians:

Galatians 2:20: I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

So, despise the fact that we have a sinful flesh, the key to overcoming the world is faith:

  • And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
  • Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Therefore, we can see the key to our Christian life is our belief and faith.  And this faith is not blind faith, but a faith based on facts and testimony:

  • This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ;
  • not by the water only but by the water and the blood.
  • And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

Jesus confirmed that the Spirit is Truth in John 14:

John 14:16-17: And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

John emphasized that it just was not the Spirit that testifies, but also water and blood:

  • For there are three that testify:
  • the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree.
  • If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater,
  • for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son.
  • Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself.

Since we believe in the Son of God, we have the testimony of God in ourselves.  But the opposite is also true:

  • Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar,
  • because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son.

So this testimony is critical differentiator to those who have eternal life and those that do not:

  • And this is the testimony,
  • that God gave us eternal life,
  • and this life is in his Son.
  • Whoever has the Son has life;
  • whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Then John tells us why he writes these things:

  • I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God,
  • that you may know that you have eternal life.

This is the assurance of salvation that we are studying.  He writes these things so that we may “know” that we have eternal life!  And this results in us being able to come to the throne of God with confidence because we also know that he hears us:

  • And this is the confidence that we have toward him,
  • that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
  • And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask,
  • we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

What a huge privilege!  We have the assurance of eternal life, the assurance of coming to him safely, and the assurance that he hears our request.  All based on our faith.  All for just believing in his Son!

Father, I have overcome the world because of my faith in the Son of God.  I am “born of God” because of my belief that Jesus is the Son of God and, therefore, I know that I have eternal life.  The Spirit of Truth testifies to my assurance of salvation.  I will come to your throne with confidence, and I know that you will hear me!  In the name of Jesus. Amen.
