Day 2: Trust In The Lord With All Your Heart

By Rick Rene of Blessed2Teach Ministries (https://blessed2teach.com)

Prayer Guide Day #2

I will trust in the Lord even when I do not understand and will submit to him in all my ways.  Thank you, Lord, for making my paths straight!

Proverbs 3:5-6:  Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Lord,  I submit and acknowledge all my ways to you,  and trust you with all my heart.  I will not lean on my understanding, so you can make my path straight. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Context

The context of these popular verses of Proverbs 3:5-6 is the first 12 verses of Proverbs 3.  They are often summarized as “Trust in the Lord with All Your Heart.”

The first eight verses emphasize the importance of adhering to divine teachings and trusting in God for a fulfilling life. They encourage steadfast love, faithfulness, and reliance on God’s guidance over personal understanding, promising blessings like peace, favor, and health.

  1. Follow God’s teachings: Keeping commandments in your heart leads to long life and peace.

This often includes teachings from your earthly father and mother as well:

Proverbs 1:8: Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching,

  1. Embrace love and faithfulness: Bind these virtues to yourself to gain favor with God and people.
  2. Trust in God fully: Rely on the Lord, not your own wisdom, for straight paths.
  3. Reject self-reliant pride: Fear God, avoid evil, and find healing and refreshment.

Psalm 111:10: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!

The next four verses from Proverbs 3:9-12 highlight two key principles for a faithful life: honoring God with one’s material resources and humbly accepting His discipline as a sign of His love. These teachings encourage trust in God’s provision and guidance, framing both generosity and correction as pathways to spiritual and material abundance.

  • Honoring God with Wealth: By dedicating the first and best portion of one’s wealth and produce to God, a person demonstrates trust and gratitude, prioritizing Him above personal gain. This act of faith is promised to result in overflowing blessings, with barns filled with plenty and vats brimming with wine, symbolizing both material prosperity and divine favor.

Luke 6:38:  Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

  • Embracing God’s Discipline: The verses counsel against despising or growing weary of God’s reproof, as it is an expression of His love, akin to a father’s correction of a cherished son. God’s discipline is meant to guide and refine, fostering growth and alignment with His will, and should be received with humility and openness.

What great advice this part of Proverbs 3 gives us:

  1. Follow God’s teachings
  2. Embrace love and faithfulness
  3. Trust in God fully
  4. Reject self-reliant pride
  5. Honoring God with Wealth
  6. Embracing God’s Discipline

This entire 7-day study guide is about “Faith and Trust in God” and this section of scripture clarifies how we can do just that. His promises are great if we can truly trust in him with ALL our heart.  So let’s trust in him with everything and lean not on our own understanding!

Proverbs 3:1-12:

Devotional

These twelve verses are powerful truths and they begin in making sure that we understand the word of God and its teachings:

  • My son, do not forget my teaching,
  • but let your heart keep my commandments,

Obedience is key and it comes with great rewards:

  • for length of days and years of life
  • and peace they will add to you.

Not only is there a promise of a long life and peace, but also a life without dread or disaster as discussed in Proverbs 1:

Proverbs 1:33: “…but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.”

However, it is not all about obedience.  Love and faith are also foundational:

  • Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you;
  • bind them around your neck;
  • write them on the tablet of your heart.

If you dedicate yourself to love and faithfulness, God delivers even more promises:

  • So you will find favor and good success
  • in the sight of God and man.

Even though we are not of this world, God will give us favor and success, not only in His eyes but in the sight of man.  However, this takes trust in him over our understanding in the flesh:

  • Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
  • and do not lean on your own understanding.

And we need to submit all our ways to him if we want his guidance:

  • In all your ways acknowledge him,
  • and he will make straight your paths.

The Lord told Solomon, that he understands “every plan and thought” of our hearts:

1 Chronicles 28:9: And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve him with a whole heart and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.

Pride is something we always need to guard against:

  • Be not wise in your own eyes;
  • fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.

Keeping humble has other great benefits that is revealed to us in this Proverb:

  • It will be healing to your flesh
  • and refreshment to your bones.

Giving your firstfruits also comes with promises:

  • Honor the Lord with your wealth
  • and with the firstfruits of all your produce;
  • then your barns will be filled with plenty
  • and your vats will be bursting with wine.

Even accepting the Lord’s discipline has big rewards:

  • My son, do not despise the Lord‘s discipline
  • or be weary of his reproof,
  • for the Lord reproves him whom he loves,
  • as a father, the son in whom he delights.

Think about this; the main reason he disciplines us is because he loves us like a son or daughter:

Hebrews 12:5-6: And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”

Therefore, we can trust him as our Heavenly Father.  In fact, we can trust him with all our heart and we don’t even have to understand his instructions.  We just need to obey and move forward with his guidance.  Who is best to make our paths straight? A human councilor, our own reason and logic, or the Creator of the Universe himself?  As for me and my house, we will trust the Lord and let him lead us in good times and bad!

Father, you are a good good God, and I trust you with all my heart.  I will honor you with my first fruits, I will accept and learn from your discipline, and will follow you all the days of my life.  I will also swallow my pride, embrace love and faithfulness, and follow your teachings in the Word of God.  You are my refuge and fortress. The God in whom I trust! In the name of Jesus. Amen.
