The enemy stirs division, deception, and hatred to distract believers from God’s promises to Israel and His call to stand with His chosen people. Day 1: The Rise of Power and the Fall of Disobedience (Esther 1:1-22)

Introduction

The Book of Esther opens with a massive empire ruled by a proud king who displays his wealth and power for six months. Yet one act of defiance by Queen Vashti shakes the entire system and sets the stage for God’s hidden plan. The Bible’s description of King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I, r. 486–465 BC), the palace at Susa, the vast empire from India to Ethiopia, and the Persian administrative system (satraps, couriers, irrevocable decrees) matches historical records from Herodotus, Babylonian tablets, and excavations at Susa. Archaeology confirms the palace layout, colored hangings, marble pillars, and luxurious pavement described in Esther 1. This shows the book is rooted in real 5th-century BC Persian history—God’s Word is accurate and trustworthy even as He works invisibly to protect His people.

Why this matters today

In a world of shifting alliances, media bias, and rising antisemitism, Esther 1 reminds us that no government or power structure is permanent. The Bible’s precise details about Xerxes’ empire prove God’s Word is reliable history. NATO’s negative stances against Israel, media imbalances, and voices carrying the spirit of Haman show how quickly human systems can turn against God’s chosen people. But God uses even these disruptions to prepare deliverance. We must stand against deep-state corruption everywhere while trusting God’s unbreakable promises to Israel—His plan will prevail.

Section 1 – Scripture Reading & Analysis

Esther 1:1-12: Now in the days of Ahasuerus, the Ahasuerus who reigned from India to Ethiopia over 127 provinces, in those days when King Ahasuerus sat on his royal throne in Susa, the citadel, in the third year of his reign he gave a feast for all his officials and servants. The army of Persia and Media and the nobles and governors of the provinces were before him, while he showed the riches of his royal glory and the splendor and pomp of his greatness for many days, 180 days. And when these days were completed, the king gave for all the people present in Susa the citadel, both great and small, a feast lasting for seven days in the court of the garden of the king’s palace. There were white cotton curtains and violet hangings fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rods and marble pillars, and also couches of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl, and precious stones. Drinks were served in golden vessels, vessels of different kinds, and the royal wine was lavished according to the bounty of the king. And drinking was according to this edict: “There is no compulsion.” For the king had given orders to all the staff of his palace to do as each man desired. Queen Vashti also gave a feast for the women in the palace that belonged to King Ahasuerus.

On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha and Abagtha, Zethar and Carkas, the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus, to bring Queen Vashti before the king with her royal crown, in order to show the peoples and the princes her beauty, for she was lovely to look at. But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s command delivered by the eunuchs. At this the king became enraged, and his anger burned within him.

Analysis: The chapter begins by describing the huge Persian empire and the king’s six-month-long party to show off his wealth and power. But on the last day of the second feast, the king—drunk and wanting to impress everyone—orders Queen Vashti to appear wearing her crown so people can admire her beauty. She refuses. This act of defiance makes the king furious and sets off a chain of events that changes everything. The Bible’s details match Xerxes I’s reign: the vast empire, the palace at Susa (excavated with marble pillars, multicolored hangings, and luxurious pavement), and the bureaucratic style of Persian decrees. God is already at work, using human pride to open the door for Esther’s rise.

Summary: The Bible accurately describes the Persian Empire and Xerxes’ palace—details confirmed by archaeology and ancient records—proving God’s Word is reliable history. Yet the scene also shows how quickly human power can crack: one act of defiance shakes the strongest throne. God’s control remains even when people act proud or foolish. Vashti’s refusal, though costly, became the path God used to bring Esther forward. What looks like loss is often God setting up something much greater.

Section 2 – Continued Scripture & Application to Current Times

Esther 1:13-22: Then the king said to the wise men who knew the times (for this was the king’s procedure toward all who were versed in law and judgment, the men next to him being Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who saw the king’s face, and sat first in the kingdom): “According to the law, what is to be done to Queen Vashti, because she has not performed the command of King Ahasuerus delivered by the eunuchs?” Then Memucan said in the presence of the king and the officials, “Not only against the king has Queen Vashti done wrong, but also against all the officials and all the peoples who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus. For the queen’s behavior will be made known to all women, causing them to look at their husbands with contempt, since they will say, ‘King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him, and she did not come.’ This very day the noble women of Persia and Media who have heard of the queen’s behavior will say the same to all the king’s officials, and there will be contempt and wrath in plenty. If it please the king, let a royal order go out from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes so that it may not be repealed, that Vashti is never again to come before King Ahasuerus. And let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she. So when the decree made by the king is proclaimed throughout all his kingdom, for it is vast, all women will give honor to their husbands, high and low alike.” This advice pleased the king and the princes, and the king did as Memucan proposed. He sent letters to all the royal provinces, to every province in its own script and to every people in its own language, that every man be master in his own household and speak according to the language of his people.

Analysis: The king’s advisors blow the situation out of proportion and convince him to issue a permanent law that Vashti will never return and that every husband must be the leader in his home. The decree goes out to every corner of the empire in every language. What starts as a personal argument turns into an official rule for the whole kingdom. God uses this overreaction to clear the way for Esther, showing His hand in human decisions.

Application to Current Times:

Changes in worldwide power—like NATO staying out of direct action even when U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran are praised—show that human rules and partnerships can change quickly. These shifts reflect the spirit of Haman, weakening support for Israel and allowing deep state elements to influence God’s people. But we stand against such corruption, knowing God’s promises to Israel will prevail over any corruption (outside of Israel or within), and He will use these moments to fulfill His plan.

Summary:

People may try to fix problems with strict rules and big announcements, but God uses even their overreactions to advance His secret plan. What looks like the end of one chapter is really the start of God’s bigger story. No matter how impressive human power looks, the Lord stays in charge—working quietly to place His people exactly where they need to be while the proud make plans He will eventually overturn.

Section 3: Personal Application, Scripture Memory, Journaling & Prayer

Personal Application:

Trust that God is in control of every government and every alliance. When big changes happen in the world or in your own life, look for how He might be getting you ready for something important. Stay humble and ask God to show you His hand in everything that happens. Stand against deep state corruption but support God’s chosen people, knowing His promises will be fulfilled.

Key Verse for Memory:

Esther 1:19b – “…let a royal order go out from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes so that it may not be repealed…”

Why it’s popular: This phrase is the origin of the well-known biblical expression “the law of the Medes and Persians” (or “the laws of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be changed”). It appears again in Daniel 6:8, 12, 15 and is often memorized as a powerful illustration of human decrees that seem irreversible—yet God’s higher plan still prevails.

Journaling Prompts:

• Think of a time when something unexpected or disappointing in your life later led to something good. How might God have been working?
• How do powerful people or groups (news, politics, world leaders) affect your trust in God?
• Write a short prayer asking God to help you stay calm and faithful when the world feels unstable.

Summary: No matter how strong or impressive human power looks, it never lasts forever and is always under God’s bigger plan. When things fall apart or leaders make big changes, we can have peace knowing God is still on the throne. He uses every shift—even the confusing ones—to get His people into position for victory. That gives us real hope: our God rules over every king, every law, and every headline.

Father, thank You that You sit above every throne and every alliance on earth. When powerful groups shift or break apart, help us remember that You are still in control and working everything for good. Give us wisdom to see Your hand in world events and courage to trust You no matter what happens. Help us stay humble and put You first above every human authority. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
