Day 3: The Son (Jesus) Is God

Introduction

Today, we look at the second Person of the Trinity: Jesus Christ. He is not a created being, not just a prophet, not just a good teacher. He is the eternal, uncreated God who put on human skin to rescue us. If Jesus is anything less than fully God, the gospel collapses. Today the Bible will prove: Jesus is God, and that truth changes everything. We’ll also delve deeper into how Jesus is both fully man and fully God in the flesh, as the Scriptures clearly teach, blending His divine nature with His humanity to fulfill His redemptive mission.

Section 1 – Key Scripture & Reading

John 1:1–3, 14: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 20:28: Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”

Titus 2:13: …waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,

2 Peter 1:1: To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:

Isaiah 9:6: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

John 8:58-59: Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

Colossians 1:16: For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

Hebrews 1:2-3: …but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

Summary

The same Word who spoke galaxies into existence became a baby so He could grow up and die for you. He didn’t just bring a message about God; He is God in human skin, walking our dirt roads, touching our lepers, weeping our tears. Thomas fell on his knees and cried “My Lord and my God!” because he finally saw it: Jesus is not less than God; He is God with a face we can kiss. Your Savior is not a created being; He is the Creator who let Himself be nailed to a tree because He wanted you more than He wanted comfort. This truth shines through John 1:1, where we see three profound realities: Jesus was “in the beginning,” eternally existing with God; He is distinct from the Father, yet “with” Him; and He shares the same divine nature, for He “was God.” John 1:14 confirms this Word—Jesus—became flesh, fully God and fully man, dwelling among us to reveal the Father’s glory.

Section 2 – Teaching & Explanation

Now we go deeper. The Bible doesn’t merely hint that Jesus is God; it shouts it from every angle: His eternal nature, His divine titles, His exclusive works, and His own unmistakable claims. What we are about to see is not a collection of vague proof-texts but a mountain of evidence that crashed over the first-century world like a tidal wave, leaving the religious leaders furious and the disciples breathless in worship. Look closely: every verse is another hammer-strike driving home the same glorious truth: Jesus is the one true God who stepped into our story.

Jesus himself clearly claimed to be God in flesh by:

1. Accepting worship. Only God should accept worship, and many verses show that Jesus was worshiped, and when he was worshiped, he did not correct anyone.  Matthew 14:33: “Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Matthew 9:18: While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live.” Luke 24:51-53: While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.  And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy and were continually in the temple praising God.  Matthew 2:11: And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Even Angels worship him as shown in Hebrews 1:6:  And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.”  Angels never worshiped a prophet or a man. But the Angels knew Jesus was God or they would not have worshiped him.  We (his servants) will also worship Jesus (the Lamb of God on the Throne) in the future as stated by Revelation 22:3:  No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him.
2. Forgiving sins.  Only God can actually forgive all of man’s sins, correct?  Well, Jesus forgave sins many/many times in the Bible. Mark 2:5-7: When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Mark 2:8-11 continues: … Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” He got up, took his mat, and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!” Also, Jesus forgave the sins of a sinful woman who came to Jesus while He ate at Simon the Pharisee’s house. Seeing her reverence, Jesus compared her love with Simon’s lack of love. Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” (Luke 7:48).  The New Testament Gospel (Gospel means “good news”) is “My friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you” (Acts 13:38).  The only way this is possible if Jesus is God.
3. Claiming “Before Abraham was, I am” See John 8:58 if you want even more proof that Jesus knew he was God.  “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”  “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds. Jesus was clearing referring back to Exodus 3:14 where God told Moses “I am who I am”: God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.'”.  Jesus clearly claimed to be the great I AM of the Old Testament!  He confirmed it again in John 13:9 “I am telling you now before it happens so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am.

Additional verses confirming Jesus being God:

Hebrews 1:8: But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.”

John 10:30: I and the Father are one.

Colossians 2:9: For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,

Romans 9:5: To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.

Summary

Every “I AM” statement was Jesus picking up the divine name Yahweh and putting it on His own lips. The religious leaders wanted to stone Him because they understood exactly what He was claiming—and He was right. The One who upholds the universe by the word of His power let those same hands be pierced so you could be held forever. He is not a junior partner in the Godhead; He is the exact radiance of the Father’s glory wearing scars that prove His love. Worship isn’t optional when you see Jesus as He really is; it’s the only sane response. Jesus Himself proved His divinity by accepting worship—something only God deserves—as seen when His disciples bowed before Him without correction, and even angels worship Him (Hebrews 1:6). He forgave sins, a prerogative of God alone, astonishing the crowds and infuriating leaders who knew only God could do so (Mark 2:5-11; Luke 7:48). And in John 8:58, He boldly declared, “Before Abraham was, I am,” echoing Exodus 3:14’s “I AM WHO I AM,” confirming His eternal existence as God. These claims, blending His full humanity with undiminished deity, fueled the Jews’ attempts to kill Him, culminating in His crucifixion under Pilate’s sign declaring Him “King of the Jews”—a nod to His divine sovereignty.

Section 3 – Reflection / Memory / Application

Logic to Memorize

When people say Jesus is not God, memorize these 3 simple points:

1. Jesus forgave sins (many times): Only the true God can forgive sins
2. Jesus accepted worship (many times): Only the true God should accept worship 
3. Jesus said, “Before Abraham I am”: And the Jews tried to stone him (John 8:58-59)

Verses to Memorize

John 1:1: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… 

John 1:14: And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 20:28: Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”

Colossians 1:16: For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

Practice

Speak one of Jesus’ “I AM” statements out loud and thank Him personally. Reflect on how Jesus, as God in the flesh, was present at creation (unlike any prophet or man), sustaining all things even now, and apply this by praising Him for forgiving your sins as only God can.

Summary

When you grasp that Jesus is fully God, worship explodes out of you like it did out of Thomas. You don’t just admire Him from a distance; you fall at His feet because those feet were nailed for you. Every “I AM” becomes personal: He is your bread, your light, your shepherd, your resurrection, your life. The God who spoke “Let there be light” now says to your heart, “Let there be peace—I’ve got you.” Fall in love with Him all over again today; He never stopped being in love with you. As both man and God, Jesus bridges the divine and human, creating all things through Him, forgiving sins with divine authority, and claiming eternal “I AM” status—truths that transform your daily walk into one of awe and gratitude.

Full-Day Summary

Jesus is not less than God; He is God with scars, God who loves you enough to die and rise again. He is worthy of every song, every knee, and every breath you have. When you really see Him as He is—fully God and fully man, present at creation, accepting worship, forgiving sins, and declaring His eternal divinity—worship isn’t optional; it’s the only thing that makes sense. The Creator became your brother, your substitute, your treasure. Fall at His feet today and rise forgiven, accepted, and passionately loved by the God who has your name engraved on His hands.

Lord Jesus, my Lord and my God, thank you for leaving heaven to save me, for being both fully God and fully man to redeem us. I worship You because You are worthy. Help me love you more every day. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
