Sukkot 2025: Dwelling in God’s Presence – A Teaching on the Feast of Tabernacles
As we approach the joyous Feast of Tabernacles tomorrow on October 6, 2025, this teaching invites us to step into the heart of Sukkot—a time of gratitude, reflection, and hope. Rooted in God’s faithful care during Israel’s wilderness journey, Sukkot reminds us of our own temporary lives and the eternal home awaiting us in Christ. Through Scripture’s lens, we explore its biblical roots, Jesus’ fulfillment, and its call to celebrate while looking forward to His return. Join in this celebration of God’s dwelling presence, from fragile booths to the New Jerusalem.
We will cover this is 3 sections:
-
The Biblical Foundation and Significance of Sukkot
-
New Testament Connections: Jesus as the Dwelling Presence
-
Celebration Practices and Prophetic Hope
The Biblical Foundation and Significance of Sukkot
Sukkot, or the Feast of Tabernacles, starts at sunset on October 6, 2025, and runs through sunset on October 13. It falls on the fifteenth day of the seventh month in the Religious/Hebrew calendar. This joyful pilgrimage festival:
- Comes straight from God’s commands in Leviticus 23:33-42.
- It honors how God cared for the Israelites during their forty years in the wilderness after leaving Egypt. As they traveled to the Promised Land, they stayed in simple shelters called sukkahs—booths made from branches.
- These reminded everyone how much they relied on God for safety and food during tough times.
- The feast looks back at that rescue, but it also looks ahead to God’s plan to live closely with His people forever.
God gave clear rules for the feast, focusing on rest, offerings, and celebration.
Leviticus 23:33-36: And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, On the fifteenth day of this seventh month and for seven days is the Feast of Booths to the Lord. On the first day shall be a holy convocation; you shall not do any ordinary work. For seven days you shall present food offerings to the Lord. On the eighth day you shall hold a holy convocation and present a food offering to the Lord. It is a solemn assembly; you shall not do any ordinary work.”
The seven days lead into an eighth day of special gathering, called Shemini Atzeret. It calls people to stop work and give thanks.
Attack by Hammas on Shemini Atzeret: On October 7, 2023, during the Jewish holiday of Shemini Atzeret, Hamas and allied Palestinian militants launched a surprise coordinated assault on Israel from the Gaza Strip, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.
- Attack Methods: Involved thousands of rockets into Israel, paragliders and speedboats breaching the border, and ground incursions by about 3,000 fighters.
- Targets: Focused on southern Israeli communities, military outposts, and the Nova music festival near Kibbutz Re’im.
- Casualties: Resulted in ~1,200 deaths (mostly civilians, including foreigners) and over 240 hostages taken to Gaza.
- Timing Rationale: Likely chosen to exploit the holiday’s celebratory mood, with many Israelis at synagogues or gatherings and reduced security vigilance, while symbolically desecrating a sacred day of joy and Torah study.
More details tie the feast to the harvest and living in booths:
Leviticus 23:39-42: “On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the produce of the land, you shall celebrate the feast of the Lord seven days. On the first day shall be a solemn rest, and on the eighth day shall be a solemn rest. And you shall take on the first day the fruit of splendid trees, branches of palm trees and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God seven days. You shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord for seven days in the year. It is a statute forever throughout your generations; you shall celebrate it in the seventh month. You shall dwell in booths for seven days. All native Israelites shall dwell in booths.”
Sukkot is one of three big pilgrimage feasts. Here’s how they connect:
- Passover: Remembers freedom from slavery, pointing to Christ’s blood that saves us.
- Pentecost: Celebrates the gift of the Torah and the Holy Spirit coming down.
- Sukkot: Shows God’s presence guiding Israel in the desert with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night.
It lines up with the fall harvest of fruits like figs, pomegranates, dates, and grapes—kind of like Thanksgiving, but stretched over seven days. It honors the workers who lived in field huts during harvest time. Known as the Season of Our Joy, it’s the happiest of all biblical holidays, full of thanks for God’s gifts.
The feast also welcomes everyone from every nation:
Zechariah 14:16-17: Then everyone who survives of all the nations that have come against Jerusalem shall go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Booths.
And if any of the families of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, there will be no rain on them.
In 2025, as people join in from afar, Sukkot reminds us it’s not just for Israel. It’s a preview of worldwide peace, where God’s nearness brings all people together in joy.

Section 2: New Testament Connections: Jesus as the Dwelling Presence
The New Testament brings Sukkot to life in fresh ways. It shows Jesus as the full meaning behind the feast—the God who pitched His tent among us in a human body. This links the short-term shelters of the past to the forever home of the future. Like the Israelites in their sukkahs under God’s shining glory (the Shekinah), Jesus is “God with us.” He changes the old symbols into real truth.
Jesus joined in Sukkot and used its traditions to share deep messages about spiritual life.
John 7:2, 37-39: Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand… On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
On the feast’s last big day, during rituals pouring water to pray for rain and new life, Jesus called out. He promised Himself as the endless source of life—the Holy Spirit rushing like rivers to strengthen those who follow Him.
- The Chosen has a scene where Jesus is celebrating Sukkot with his disciples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSNguYrPuSE
This idea of “dwelling” runs through the Gospels and letters. It contrasts our short lives on earth with God’s lasting home. Paul says our bodies are like tents that wear out, but we wait for something better:
2 Corinthians 5:1-4: For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
Like Abraham, who lived in tents as a traveler looking for a true city, we are outsiders here:
Hebrews 11:8-10: By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.
Jesus promises us that better place:
John 14:2-3: In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
At the heart of it all is Jesus becoming human:
John 1:14: And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
The word “dwelt” means “tabernacled”—a direct tie to Sukkot’s booths. Jesus completes the Law by living it out perfectly, freeing believers from its demands:
Matthew 5:17-20: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
Therefore, whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Romans 10:4: For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
During Sukkot 2025, these links help us see Jesus not just joining the feast, but being its true center. He calls us from shaky shelters to His lasting hold.

Section 3: Celebration Practices and Prophetic Hope
Marking Sukkot in 2025 mixes old ways with today’s touches. It builds joy, togetherness, and excitement for God’s rule. Families and groups set up sukkahs with branches from palms, willows, and leafy trees. These open shelters host meals under the stars. Key parts include:
- Feasting on harvest fruits.
- Singing songs of praise.
- Waving the lulav—a bundle of palm branches—in lines that recall the desert travelers’ trust in God.
The eighth day, Shemini Atzeret, turns quieter for thought. Prayers for rain draw from Isaiah’s picture of rescue:
Isaiah 12:1-3: You will say in that day: “I will give thanks to you, O Lord, for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, that you might comfort me. “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.” With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.
In synagogues, Simchat Torah bursts with life. Torah scrolls parade around with chants in alphabetical order, dances, and kids holding flags with apples and tiny scrolls. Seven loops stand for the Law’s wholeness—now complete in Christ.
These steps lead into Sukkot’s big future view. To get the full picture, look at the fall feasts as a set: Rosh Hashanah (Feast of Trumpets), Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), and Sukkot. Like the spring feasts matched Jesus’ first coming—His death (Passover), burial (Unleavened Bread), rising (Firstfruits), and the Spirit (Pentecost). These fall ones point to His return in power. Rosh Hashanah’s trumpets call to mind the shout at His coming:
1 Thessalonians 4:16: For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
Yom Kippur’s focus on forgiveness previews final judgment and Israel’s turning back to God:
Zechariah 12:10: And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.
Sukkot wraps it up with the gathering of people—Jews and others—into God’s presence on earth.
Views on what Sukkot means for the future differ among Christians. They add layers to our hope, all rooted in the Bible. Premillennial thinkers expect Christ back before a real 1,000-year rule. They see Sukkot as a sign of that time: nations traveling to Jerusalem to honor the King (Zechariah 14:16-17), just as survivors from hard times will join Christ’s rule from Zion. Peace and plenty will flow, with God’s glory covering the land. It matches Revelation’s image of faithful people reigning:
Revelation 20:4: in part… and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
Some in this group think the 1,000 years might start right on a future Sukkot, shifting from trouble to full harvest.
Amillennial and postmillennial views take it more as a symbol. They see the “thousand years” as the church’s time now or a spiritual rule. Sukkot points straight to forever after, where old tents fade into the New Jerusalem:
Revelation 21:1-4: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
Revelation 21:3: And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.”
No matter the angle, all agree: Christ’s return starts endless joy—maybe through a 1,000-year start or right into eternity. It calls us to live as travelers now, tents set toward glory. As we raise sukkahs this October, we live that hope—happy in short joys, fixed on God’s lasting home, where all nations praise, blessings pour like rain, and joy never ends.
